Nail Surgery (Ingrown & Painful Toenails)

Nail surgery is a routine, minor procedure performed under local anaesthetic to treat persistent ingrown, distorted, or painful toenails. It offers a safe, lasting solution when conservative treatments haven’t worked, helping you return to comfort and normal activity

What to Expect at Your Nail Surgery Appointment

Initial assessment

Your podiatrist will review your nail and foot health history, discuss any symptoms or prior treatments, and determine whether nail surgery is the appropriate next step.

Local anaesthetic

On the day, your toe is numbed with a local anaesthetic so you feel minimal or no pain during the procedure.

Surgical procedure

Part or whole of the nail is removed and a chemical is applied to stop the nail growing back.

Dressing and aftercare instructions

Your toe will be dressed and you’ll be given guidance on how to look after it during healing, including resting and keeping the area clean and dry.

Follow-up review

A re-dressing or review appointment is typically booked to check on healing and ensure you’re recovering well.

When Nail Surgery May Be the Right Choice

Nail surgery is often recommended when:

  • An ingrown toenail has recurred despite conservative treatment
  • A toenail is repeatedly causing pain or infection
  • Nail-related issues are limiting walking, footwear or daily activities
  • You want a more permanent solution rather than ongoing management
